Yesterday was a black day for all Tamilians. 11 people who were protesting against the under construction second smelter at the Sterlite Copper unit in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, alleging pollution were killed in a police firing.
The tragic incident stirred up a huge uproar across the state. Many Tamil film stars, including Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, strongly condemned the firing and government’s stand over the issue.
Meanwhile, one of star Indian directors Shankar faced the ire of angry netizens. Last night, Shankar took to Twitter and congratulated the Chennai Super Kings team for a thrilling victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in a nail-biting match in the ongoing IPL. This angered the protestors who vehemently trolled Shankar for his tweet on cricket while the state was gripped in a volatile situation and grief.
Respecting the sentiment, Shankar immediately deleted his tweet. And this morning, he once again took to Twitter and expressed his shock and grief over the death of the protestors.
It is shocking and painful.. my deepest heart felt condolences to the families of the people who died in tuticorin
