Special column : Moods and movies

We all know that water is the best drink there is. Some say coconut water too. You take those when you are extremely thirsty. But on Sri Rama Navami you do not offer water or coconut water to God. Instead you make paanakam. And when eating biryani, a soda is the best drink to have. And when you have a party with your friends, you all know what goes well with that occasion (though it is very injurious to your health). The point I am trying to make here is that each occasion demands a different drink. There is no such thing as one for all occasions kind of drink.

Similarly movies too. There is no such thing as one genre for all occasions. Off late we seem to think that comedy genre is for all occasions. But I beg to differ because once the comedy movie is done, all that jokes that made you happy during the movie die down and make you even more moody. So comedy might not be a good option when you are really down and sad. Instead pick a horror, a short and very good horror movie. My picks from latest movies are Pisaachi, Pizza, Avunu, Prema Katha Chitram etc.

The best time pass movies are pure action entertainers with decent plots and twists. The ones that can make you indulge in the proceedings and root for the protagonist. I think movies like Race Gurram, NannakuPrematho, Pataas, Supreme and latest Dhruva are fine examples. A good action entertainer is a best stress buster.

You might be thinking but we can never watch serious drama based movies. In our busy life off late we hardly have time to sit at home and watch a serious drama or even biopic. But once in a while you get a leisurely Saturday afternoons where we end up sleeping or do some household chores. Next time when you get one like that try a serious drama like old classics Kali Kaalam, Samsaram Oka Chandarangam, RudraVeena, Ankuram etc.

And when you have a gathering of friends at home and you decide to watch a movie after the party, nothing comes close to Suspense movies. A good gatehring full of people talking and taking wild guesses can only add up to the fun of watching a suspense movie. Again my picks are old classic Ave Kallu, AameEvaru, Anveshana to latest Anasuya, Anukshanam, Karthikeya, Kshanam, Bhadram, 1-Nenokkadine etc.

The best movies to watch in a gloomy weather when it is raining heavily or when it is cloudy are the romantic ones. In romantic genre there are love stories like Geethanjali, Tholiprema, PremanteIderaetc and then there are Rom-coms like Anand, Godavari, PelliChoopulu, Kushi, Oohalugusagusa lade etc. Either type can go well with the weather outside.

And now the Telugu audience’s favorite genre, Family dramas. I can not exactly pin point an ideal occasion to watch these but I think festival times like Sankranthi or Diwali should be fine to watch movies like Shathamanam bhavathi, Seethamma Vaakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, Bommarillu, KalisundamRaa, Santosham, Ninne Pelladatha, Murari etc.

There is a time to watch tragedies too. Yes you heard it right. On days when you are in a jubilant mood and all alone, turn on a good tragedy and cry like there is no tomorrow. My suggestions are the evergreen Maatrudevobhava, Sagara Sangamam, Seetharamayyagari manavaralu etc.

And like I said in the beginning, comedies although may seem like for all occasions, rest of the genres are good too but for different occasions. Don’t just stick to your water for all occasions.
