India's richest haul ever in Olympics – 1 Gold, 1 Bronze, one more medal assured

21 August 2008, Hyderabad.

The maximum number of medals India had won in a single Olympics was two, gold in Hockey and bronze in Wrestling in 1952. Apart from that, we have always won just one medal in all the games that we have participated in. However, in the current the Beijing Olympics, India has won two medals already and is assured of one more thus making it our richest haul ever. While Abhinav Bindra had earlier made the country proud by winning the gold medal in the Shooting event, it was the turn of wrestler Sushil Kumar to win a bronze medal yesterday. Sushil participated in the 66 kg freestyle wrestling event and even though he faced as setback in the initial round, he then scored three victories in a row to clinch the bronze medal. On the other hand, boxer Vijender has reached the semifinals of the Men's middleweight (75 kg) event thus assuring India of a bronze medal atleast. Three medals in one games is India's richest haul ever and looking at the form and skill displayed by some of the other competitors who reached the quarterfinals in their respective events, London 2012 sure promises more riches for the nation! Congratulations Sushil and Good Luck Vijender, reach the finals and make us prouder now!
