The pressure by the TDP, CPI, CPM and the PRP seems to have paid off as far
as the SEZ (Special Economic Zone) bill is concerned. Leading regional
channels in AP are abuzz with the news that the A P Government is likely to
withdraw its current SEZ bill and reintroduce it with major modifications.
Top of the change list is the equity participation of farmers and wage
laborers in the SEZs. The state government is working with a sub-committee
from the center to minutely examine different aspects of this new SEZ bill
which will be introduced in the next cabinet session. The government
though is trying to impart a farmer-friendly spin to the entire exercise.
But this victory in all fairness belongs to the opposition – particularly
the TDP and the Left parties. Their continuous pressure forced the
government to go back to the drawing board and reexamine the core policies.
The left too played its part in cautioning the AP government that a SIngur
like situation would not be good for the state. |
