The state government’s decision to subsidize education in the form of fee reimbursement has resulted in the doubling of enrolment for professional courses like medicine and engineering. The BC enrolments in professional courses last year was 28,000 while this year it has jumped to 55,000 students. The figures get even more impressive at the intermediate level. Of the 50 lakh students enrolled in intermediate, the fees of around 22.18 lakh students are being subsidized by the state government. The CM has gone on record to state that it is his dream to ensure that economically backward students are given opportunities to excel in education. Numerous social-economic surveys have clearly indicated education as the key factor that can pull below poverty line families into the main stream of society. So the government is keen to ensure that economically backward upper caste families get a shot at quality education. Villages in particular have been identified as key focus areas and the government has called in the help of NGOs to ensure peak enrolment of students’ right from the primary level onwards.
