Home Minister sets the record straight

Stung by repeated accusations that the Congress government is behind phone and facsimile taps, its Home Minster Jana Reddy dared the opposition to back their allegations with proof. He said that on the basis of sufficient proof, his ministry would not hesitate to use all and every available legal measures. He expressed anguish that senior politicians are making irresponsible statements despite being aware of the conditions under which governments usually resort to putting taps on phones. He said taps are the method of last resort which the government turns to incase of apprehending those who indulge in anti-national activities. He said he was very confident that the current government would not indulge in any such activities that would cause embarrassment to its leadership. He was particularly severe on the PRP for making accusations without any substantial proof. He said most of the accusations were knee-jerk reactions aimed at garnering publicity.
