Upendra’s joining into the PRP has set off a lot of excitement in
Vijayawada, about the direction that his son-in-law, the Congress MP from
Vijayawada, Lagadapati Rajagopal will take. It is by now an open secret
that Lagadapati is not having the smoothest of passages with the Congress
leadership in the state. His run-ins with the Telengana leaders are
especially causing him and the powers that be, untold embarrassment. There
are whisper campaigns in Vijayawada gaining momentum that the son-in-law
might follow his illustrious father-in-law into the PRP camp. However,
people who have known Rajagopal closely dismiss these allegations as
meaningless. They question the wisdom of why he would leave the canvas of a
proven national party for the untested waters of a newly formed regional
party which has yet to prove its political mettle. But if Chiranjeevi’s
Rayalaseema leg of the tour is any indication, the Megastar is slowly but
surely gathering some much needed momentum. With invaluable advice coming
in from veterans like Upendra, Chiranjeevi’s inexperience will no longer
be an issue, much like NTR’s wasn’t in 1983. PRP observers are hoping
that Upendra’s entry into the party will be the beginning of a new wave
of high profile defections from both the Congress and the TDP.
