Review : Ghani – Routine but watchable

Varun Tej’s Ghani has been in the making for a long time now. Directed by Kiran Korrapati, this film was released today. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Right from his childhood onwards, Ghani’s only dream is to become a professional boxer like his father(Upendra). But due to the politics in the sporting world, Ghani’s father passes away. But that does not stop Ghani from fulfilling his dream. He takes the help of a former boxing champion Vijayendra Sinha(Sunil Shetty) and trains hard to become a boxer. The rest of the story is as to how Ghani goes all out and wins the boxing championship and fulfills his father’s dream.

Plus Points:

Ghani is an out and out Varun Tej show all the way. He fits the role of a boxer perfectly and has gone all out. Be it his body transformation or moves as a boxer, Varun Tej is solid in his role. All his scenes with his mother played by Nadia have been executed well.

Ghani has some big names like Sunil Shetty, Upendra, and Jagapathi Babu in key roles and each of them play their parts to perfection. Upendra comes in the flashback portions and brings an emotional touch to the film. Sunil Shetty is very good as the boxing coach and gets an important role. Jagapathi Babu does his best as the main villain in the film.

Saiee Manjrekar makes an impressive debut and looks cute in the film. Her screen presence, dialogue delivery and expressions are pretty good. Naveen Chandra gets an important role and does well in it.

The second half is where the film catches pace as it has decent drama, family emotions and a good climax. The boxing set up and match mixing aspects have been showcased quite well during this time.

Minus Points:

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is the routine story. Boxing dramas have been made quite a lot in Indian cinema and Ghani is no different. The film suffers heavily from predictable narration and cliched sporting moments.

The first half of the film is yet another big drawback as the love track has not been handled well during this time. The director Kiran does not have much to do during this time and comes to the point only during the break point.

Upendra plays a key role and one gets a feeling that he was not utilized properly in the film. More drama in his episode would have made matters quite impactful to the proceedings.

Technical Aspects:

Production values of the film are very good. The locations, boxing setup and visuals are quite good and the amazing camera work only enhances the proceedings. Thaman is yet another backbone of the film as his music and BGM elevate the proceedings completely. Dialogues are decent and so was the production design. Editing was dull in the first half and was crisp in the second half. The action choreography for all the boxing matches has been done quite aesthetically and creates an impact.

Coming to the director Kiran Korrapati, he has done just a passable job with the film. Though he chooses a routine story, he has narrated the film well in the second half. Had he handled the first half in a better manner with some comedy, romance and good emotions, things would have been quite effective.

Verdict:

On the whole, Ghani is a passable boxing drama which has a stand out performance by Varun Tej. However, the routine storyline, dull first half and predictable scenes hamper the proceedings. If you are okay with these above said aspects and love sports dramas, Ghani can be given a shot this week but there is nothing new that is being showcased here.
