Hollywood’s Premier Writing Course Coming to India
“a not-so-secret force in the movie industry and Hollywood’s most sought-after screenwriting instructor.” – Vanity Fair
Ramoji Academy of Film & Television (RAFT) is proud to introduce Mr. Robert McKee’s ‘Story Seminar’ to India. Mr. McKee is the preeminent authority on screenwriting in the world today, and the Story Seminar is easily the most influential writing class in Hollywood. A quick look at the numbers: alumni of his seminars have won 32 Oscars, 182 Emmy Awards, 21 Writers’ Guild Awards, 17 Directors’ Guild Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing, the British Book of the Year Award, and many other awards. Mr. McKee will present the much acclaimed 4-day seminar at Hyderabad’s Ramoji Film City from 9th to 12th February 2012.
The Story Seminar is an intense, self-contained exercise in conveying an entire approach to story. From defining and describing the smallest of story elements to illuminating and illustrating the most abstruse of concepts, the seminar gives the attendee a 360-degree view of the theory, craft, and practice of writing. Emphasizing story design and story structure, Mr. McKee’s approach to story is the distillation of a lifetime of study of writing in cinema, literature, theatre, and television. The Story Seminar has frequently been described as being inspirational and transformative; it has also been referred to as a graduate course in screenwriting compressed into 4 days.
Mr. McKee is the author of the award-winning Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and The Principles of Screenwriting, which has, since publication, become an indispensible guide to writers in any medium and professionals who deal with story in any form. Many of Mr. McKee’s students are bestselling literary writers, playwrights, television and film executives, journalists, documentary filmmakers, advertising and PR professionals, business executives and others. The book and the Story Seminar have attracted praise from writers, actors, directors, and producers.
Oscar Winning Screenwriter/Director Lawrence Kasden has described the seminar as being ‘…stimulating, innovative, and refreshingly practical.’ Two-time Oscar-winning writer Paul Haggis says: ‘Everything I know about story structure I learned from Robert McKee. End of story.’ Zak Penn, screenwriter of ‘X-Men’ and ‘The Incredible Hulk’ puts it this way: ‘My advice is…take McKee’s class. It was essential to my success as a screenwriter.’
RAFT was established with the objective of imparting high-quality training to prepare students for professional positions in the film and television industries. Employing world-class syllabi and utilizing Ramoji Film City’s state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, RAFT’s endeavor is to provide a space where theory and practice come together. Organizing the India Story Seminar is in keeping with that aspiration. As the Indian film, television, and literary industries boom and increasingly aim to create stories with universal appeal, RAFT believes that professionals and students must engage with the best thinkers in the field. The India Story Seminar invites registrations from professionals, students, and members of the public. Registration fee is set at Rs. 33,090 (incl. taxes) per head. This is almost exactly as much as it would cost to attend the Story Seminar in the USA; the fee has traditionally been higher whenever conducted in another country. It would be safe to say the delegate is unlikely to attend the seminar at a lower cost anywhere in the world. After 31st January 2012, the registration fee will be Rs. 38, 605 (incl. taxes).
Mr. McKee’s former students include: Kirk Douglas, Peter Jackson, Julia Roberts, Paul Haggis, Meg Ryan, Geoffrey Rush, David Bowie, John Cleese, Drew Carey, Diane Keaton, Drew Barrymore, Gene Reynolds, Brook Shields, Quincy Jones, Carrie Fisher, Eddie Izzard, Joel Schumacher, John Lasseter, Ed Burns, Faye Dunaway, Harry Bellafonte, Zak Penn, Stockard Channing and many others. We invite you to add your name to the list.
Registration begins second week of September. Please check at www.raft.ramojifilmcity.com.
