Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal predicted that the Congress party would not be able to win a single seat in the by-elections for which polling was held on Sunday.
Talking to reporters here on Sunday, the Congress MP said that the party failed to counter the YSR wave in Kovvur constituency of Nellore district. Further, he said the Congress party also failed to effectively counter the allegations leveled by YSR Congress party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy against the ruling party. Besides the failure to highlight the welfare schemes being implemented by the State Government, the Congress leaders also failed to give a reply on some schemes like Fee Reimbursement, 108 or Arogyasri which are facing some problems.
In Telangana region, where polling was done for six seats, Rajagopal predicted a clean sweep for Telangana Rashtra Samithi on five seats including Mahbubnagar and Nagam Janardhan Reddy’s victory from Nagar Kurnool seat. He said the separate statehood sentiment was strong even in these by-elections and the Congress party was unable to properly convey the Centre’s stand on Telangana to the people. He said the party was not able to translate the respect it enjoys for its welfare schemes into votes.
However, he said that the mainstream parties would secure their deposits and the victory margin would not high.
The Vijaywada MP said that the delay in distribution of party tickets was the main reason why candidates were unable to campaign properly. He said the party should not repeat the mistake in the by-election to be held for 17 assembly constituencies. He said he would soon make a representation to the Pradesh Congress Committee and High Command requesting for early announcement of candidates to enable them to plan their campaign. (INN)
