Nearly 20 members of Telangana Advocates Joint Action Committee were arrested when they tried to disrupt the book release function held by Vishalandhra Maha Sabha at Basheerbagh Press Club here on Saturday.

The advocates stormed into the auditorium while the book written by the author Chakravarty was about to be unveiled. Raising ‘Jai Telangana’ slogans, the advocates tried to go up to the podium to snatch the copies of the book. However, they were arrested by the police and were shifted to a nearby police station.

Later, addressing the gathering Vishalandhra Maha Sabha representative Parakala Prabhakar condemned the incident. He said that some activists were trying to suppress the voice of people who are against the division of Andhra Pradesh. He said the Vishalandhra Maha Sabha advocates ‘one language, one state’ slogan and therefore, opposes the bifurcation of the State. He claimed that a majority of people in Telangana region too were against the separation.

Prabhakar said that the Constitution has given equal rights to all citizens to express their opinion without any fear or favour. However, some organisations and individuals have been repeatedly trying to suppress the voice of others. Regarding the book which was released, he said it counters the claim that injustices have been done to the Telangana region.

This is the second time in the recent past that Telangana Advocates JAC has tried to disrupt the event organised by Vishalandhra Maha Sabha in the city. (INN)
