Good Luck Jerry starring Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role has directly premiered on Hotstar. The film is the official remake of the Tamil super hit film Kolamaavu Kokila. Let’s see how it is.

Story

Jerry alias Jaya Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor) is a middle-class girl who works in a massage parlor. She lives with her widow mother Sharbati (Mita Vashist) and a younger sister. Things take a turn when the family gets to know that Sharbati is suffering from lung cancer. Unexpectedly one day, Jerry bumps into a drug smuggler who gets nabbed by police due to her. Timmy (Jaswanth Singh) the leader of that smuggler threatens Jerry to get their cocaine back which was lost due to the police. Jerry does the job. With no means left Jerry decides to join the drug business as she is badly in need of money. Did Jerry earn money for her mother’s treatment? Did she survive in the drug business? This forms part of the rest of the story.

Plus Points

Janhvi Kapoor delivered a very fine performance as Jerry. She exhibited different emotions present in the Jerry character gracefully. She has improved a lot from her previous films and did a commendable job.

The story is promising and offers a good amount of scope for entertainment. The dark comedy placed in a few scenes evoked laughs. To mention one, the sequence involving Deepak Dobriyal in the second half is hilarious.

The director succeeded in telling this crime story by adding humor which is a tough job. The movie gets benefitted from stellar performances by the supporting cast. The pace of the film is good.

Minus points

The director messed up with the climax big time. It is rushed and results in a hodgepodge where the viewers just can’t understand what is happening. There is a lack of clarity in a few scenes.

Compared to the first half, the second half loses its steam. Newer subplots are woven in the second half by the makers which aren’t necessary. Few scenes seem repetitive.

The emotional angle in the story is not presented well. Dark comedy might not cater to everyone. The intention of a few characters wasn’t justified at all leaving the audience bewildered.

Technical Aspects

While the music by Parag Chabbra isn’t that great, the background score by Aman Pant is well tuned and is in perfect sync with the film’s theme. The cinematography by Rangarajan Ramabadran is fine.

Coming to the director, Sidharth Sengupta, he has done a decent job of engaging the audience with this plot with good humor. However, after a point in time, he loses control over the proceedings. The drama aspect could have been better. The production values are good. The editing is crisp.

Verdict
On the whole, Good Luck Jerry entertains in parts. There are hiccups in the execution with new subplots being introduced in the latter half. Janhvi and others gave admirable performances that were let down by presentation issues. More care regarding the emotional aspect and the climax portion would have made it a better one. Nonetheless, this film is a passable watch on OTT.
