It is rare for a Malayalam movie featuring an entirely fresh cast to cross the massive Rs. 100 crore gross mark in just one week, but Vaazha 2: Biopic of a Billion Bros has done exactly that. This sequel has proven that strong content and relatable characters can outperform traditional star power.
Directed by debutant Savin SA, the film stars social media sensations Hashir H, Alan Bin Siraj, Ajin Joy, and Vinayak V. By reaching the Rs. 100 crore milestone globally in 7 days, it has joined an elite list of the fastest Malayalam films to achieve this feat.
It now sits alongside blockbusters like L2: Empuraan (2 days), Thudarum (6 days), and Lokah: Chapter 1-Chandra (7 days). Matching the record set by Lokah is a remarkable achievement for a film led by newcomers.
The demand for the movie continues to grow, with theater owners increasing show counts in several regions to accommodate the massive crowds.
Written by hit director Vipin Das and produced under the WBTS Productions banner in association with Imagine Cinemas, the project is supported by a stellar cast of veterans. Actors such as Sudheesh, Bijukuttan, Jagadish, Aju Varghese, and Vijay Babu provide the necessary depth to the story.
Additionally, a significant appearance by filmmaker Alphonse Puthren has added a unique charm to the film. Combined with a high energy soundtrack by a team of talented composers, Vaazha 2 has officially become a certified blockbuster.
Recently, the Telangana State Film Chamber of Commerce proposed a resolution to move away from the rental system and adopt a percentage-based revenue model. Under this system, the distributors will get 60 percent share from the nett in the first week, 50 percent share in the second week and 40 percent share in the third week.
The Active Producers Guild issued a statement rejecting this 60-50-40 percentage-sharing model. The Guild termed it a unilateral decision by the TFCC and made it clear they are not willing to screen films in theatres that operate under this model.
Producers firmly stated that they want to continue with the existing system, where terms are decided through negotiations with exhibitors. Mythri Ravi Shankar, TG Vishwa Prasad, Naga Vamsi, Swapna Dutt, Sahu Garapati, and Venkata Satish Kilaru are among those opposing the TFCC decision, as they believe it could impact their revenues.
In the existing system, producers and distributors benefit more. But if the percentage model is implemented, it could significantly impact producers’ earnings and, in turn, box office numbers, while theatres will breathe a sigh of relief. We need to see how this issue ends.
