Interview : Kiran Korrapati – Varun Tej has gone through hell for Ghani

Ghani is all set for a release on the 8th of this month. On this occasion, we caught up with director Kiran Korrapati for a detailed interview. Here is the transcript.

How was this film born in the first place?

I had worked with Varun Tej on Tholi Prema and were supposed to do a film. It was Varun who suggested that we should do a sports drama. Then, I sat on the story and finally cracked the script.

Why did you choose boxing as Ghani’s backdrop?

In the past, games like cricket and football have been showcased a lot in Indian films. As I wanted more physical intimacy, I felt what better than the game of boxing which will be quite intense to showcase.

About the film getting postponed multiple times?

It was quite disappointing as the film was postponed at least seven times. One fine day, I even requested the makers to release the film on OTT. But the makers were quite sure that Ghani is a big-screen release and held on to the release.

Working experience with Varun Tej?

Ghani is having a grand release only because of Varun Tej as he believed in the project and brought the producers in. He spotted my talent and post the release of Tholi Prema, he announced that he will do a film with me. He has given a mind-blowing performance and gone through a lot physically.

About casting Sunil Shetty, Nadia, and Upendra?

From the day, I wrote the script, I wanted these actors. It was very hard to make Upendra Garu say yes to the film. I chased him for six months and finally made him say yes. Every character has a very good role and comes with a purpose.

About casting Saiee Manjrekar?

Varun Tej is quite clear about his co-stars in the film. For some reason, he wanted a new face for Ghani. During that time, I happened to watch Dabanng 3 and loved Saiee. Once I told Varun about my choice, he loved in she was on board.

Future Projects

I have committed to two films with producers Cherukuri Sudhakar and Bhagwan Pullla Rao. I also have one more film with Varun Tej. As of now, I am eagerly waiting for the release of Ghani and testing my luck.
