NRIs Ignored by Indian OTT Platforms – Piracy Wins Again

The OTT releases of Bad Boy Karthik, Sathi Leelavathi, and even The Raja Saab, in recent past, expose a growing problem in Indian streaming. These films were released on platforms like Amazon Prime Video and JioHotstar in India, but were unavailable or delayed for audiences in the United States on the same platforms. NRIs who already pay for multiple subscriptions are repeatedly blocked from legally watching new Indian films while Indian audiences get instant access.

This is no longer a one time issue, but a repeated pattern showing how little importance Indian OTT platforms give to the overseas market. The U.S. audience has been one of the biggest reasons for the global growth of Telugu cinema, yet legal viewers abroad are treated like an afterthought. Platforms continue promoting “streaming now” campaigns globally while quietly excluding international subscribers from access.

When paying audiences are denied legal streaming options, piracy naturally becomes the easier alternative. Poor international OTT planning hurts everyone involved – producers lose overseas revenue, platforms lose trust, and actors slowly lose relevance among overseas fans. If Indian OTT companies continue ignoring NRIs, they risk damaging one of the strongest and most loyal markets supporting Indian cinema today.
