India’s mythological epic Ramayana: Part 1 faces a major global competitor in Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus Zero. Both films are scheduled to arrive in theatres on November 6, 2026, setting up a rare overseas box-office clash. Adding to the significance, both productions carry the distinction of being the first films from their respective nations to be officially shot and certified under the “Filmed for IMAX” programme.
Godzilla Minus Zero gained significant early momentum after making its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival over the weekend. The film received a strong response at Lincoln Center and debuted with a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praised Yamazaki for retaining the emotional core of his Oscar-winning predecessor while taking the franchise into darker and more visceral territory. The film also features a clash between a regenerated Godzilla and Ghidorah.
This early critical reception adds to the anticipation surrounding the November release. Unlike Godzilla Minus Zero, which used a prestigious festival platform to build anticipation, Ramayana is bypassing festival debuts and heading directly for a worldwide theatrical rollout. Industry watchers will be keen to see how the Indian epic performs in overseas markets.
Nitesh Tiwari is directing the film, with Namit Malhotra producing it. The epic features Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash in key roles. Backed by a massive budget and Hollywood visual-effects collaborators, Ramayana is being mounted on a grand scale. Its performance on the global stage alongside Godzilla Minus Zero will be closely watched when both films arrive in November.
