Backrooms has emerged as one of the most anticipated horror films of 2026, turning a viral internet phenomenon into a large scale theatrical release backed by A24. Directed by Kane Parsons, popularly known online as Kane Pixels, the film is inspired by the unsettling “Backrooms” myth and his viral found footage videos that gained massive attention online.
The sci-fi horror thriller stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, and Finn Bennett in key roles. The film was originally scheduled to release in India on May 29, 2026, alongside its global debut, but the makers have now officially postponed the Indian release to June 12, 2026.
The delay has disappointed Indian horror fans, mainly because the film’s mystery driven narrative is highly vulnerable to online spoilers. According to reports, the release shift is linked to screen allocation and theatrical planning in India. Since the movie already carries huge social media buzz, many fans fear that avoiding spoilers for two weeks could become nearly impossible once international premieres begin.
The film has generated additional curiosity because of Parsons’ rise from YouTube creator to major studio director at just 20 years old. Reports also reveal that the makers built a massive 30,000 square foot practical set to recreate the endless maze-like environment seen in the original videos, with producers James Wan and Shawn Levy backing the ambitious horror project.
