Shocker: Kalatapasvi K Vishwanath Garu is no more

It’s another black day for the Telugu film industry as the Legendary director Kalatapasvi K. Vishwanath Garu (92) passed away. Vishwanath Garu’s demise has left a huge void in Tollywood which cannot be replaced.

Born in Repalle on 19 February 1930, Vishwanath Garu began his career as a sound recordist at Vauhini Studios in Chennai. Later he worked as an assistant director for the film Pathala Bhairavi. Aathma Gowravam was Vishwanath Garu’s first film as a director, which won National Award.

Vishwanath Garu’s films dealt with social and human issues like untouchability, the caste system, and the dowry system. The best works of the director include Sankarabharanam, Swathi Muthyam, Sagara Sangamam, Subhaleka, Swayam Krushi, Sapthapadhi, Aapadbhandavudu, Srutilayalu, and Sutradaarulu.

Apart from Telugu, he directed a few films in Hindi too. Besides direction, Vishwanath Garu also acted in a few films like Subha Sankalpam, Kalisundam Ra, Tagore, Nuvvu Leka Nenu Lenu, Santhosham, Athadu, and Aadavari Maatalaku Arthale Verule.

He has won five National Film Awards, seven state Nandi Awards, and ten Filmfare Awards south. In 1992, the central government honored Vishwanath Garu with Padma Shree. Vishwanath Garu’s last film as a director was Subhapradam. The director’s sudden demise left the entire industry and fans in shock.
