Veteran Telugu character actress Pavala Shyamala passed away in the early hours of Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad. She was 70. Doctors said she suffered a cardiac arrest at around 1:52 AM. Her mortal remains have been shifted to the hospital mortuary, and her last rites are expected to be held later today.
Pavala Shyamala began her artistic journey in theatre and radio before making her silver screen debut with Babai Abbai in 1985. Over a career spanning nearly four decades, she appeared in more than 250 Telugu films and became one of the industry’s most familiar character artistes. She won audiences over with her effortless comic timing and memorable performances in films such as Babai Hotel, Khadgam, Andhrawala, Athadu, Golimaar, and Bendu Apparao R.M.P. The prefix “Pavala” became part of her identity after a successful stage play that brought her early recognition.
Despite her immense contribution to Telugu cinema, the veteran actress endured financial hardship and prolonged health issues in her later years. She battled multiple age-related ailments, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, and Parkinson’s disease, while her family’s struggles also drew public attention over the years.
