Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana, headlined by Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, and Sai Pallavi, registered Rs. 47 crores nett (India) on its opening day from the Hindi version. While this figure might not seem big for a mega-budget film, it is essential to note that the biggie was released during the pre-Diwali period, when moviegoing isn’t the first priority for audiences in North India.
Trade reports also suggest that the Hindi version lost some of its revenue to the Telugu and Kannada versions in the South due to their wider release. The film’s business will see fluctuations until Sunday, with collections rising on one day and dropping on another. The movie is expected to unleash its fury starting Monday (the day after Diwali), as has been the case with many Bollywood Diwali releases over the years.
At the overseas box office, Ramayana earned about $5.1 million on its opening day (inclusive of premieres). Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame directed this mythological epic, while Ravi Dubey, Rakul Preet Singh, Kajal Aggarwal, and Arun Govil played key roles.
