Good Night starring K Manikandan and Meetha Raghunath in the lead roles, has now made its OTT debut on Disney Plus Hotstar. Debutant Vinayak Chandrasekaran directed the film. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

Mohan (Manikandan) is an IT employee who leads a normal life with his family. But he is ridiculed by one and all as he has a snoring issue. Also, Mohan is looked down upon by his boss (Bagavathi Perumal) as he (Mohan) is bad at English. On the other hand, we are shown Anu (Meetha Raghunath), an orphan who works at an audit firm. Mohan and Anu meet unexpectedly, and they slowly fall for each other. Later Mohan marries Anu with the consent of his parents. But the snoring issue of Mohan affects his married life. What happened later? This forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Protagonist having a health issue isn’t something new, and we have seen many films of this sort in the past. What makes Good Night special is the way things are dealt with in a natural and heartwarming manner. The director picked the “snoring” issue and weaved a neat screenplay around it that is filled with emotions and clean comedy.

The kind of problems people with snoring issue go through in their everyday life has been shown in a realistic way. The director established the characters well, making us root for them. The conflict point comes at a crucial juncture in the movie, and from there, the movie takes an emotional turn.

Every character has its own importance, and the credit must go to writing. Through the hero’s sister role, the makers showcased how societal expectations can affect married women in particular. Manikandan as Mohan is just brilliant. His natural performance adds beauty to the film and helps us empathize with him. The actor is remarkable in the emotional outburst moments.

Mudhal Nee Mudhivum Nee fame Meetha Raghunath as Anu is a perfect cast, and one will instantly fall in love with her character. The way she depicted the innocence present in her role speaks volumes about her talent. All her scenes with Manikandan came out extremely well. The movie has many moments that bring pleasant smile to our faces.

Ramesh Thilak played his part effectively. The climax sequence will leave one in splits. Healthy comedy is always blissful to watch always, and Good Night scores well on this front. The makers also give a lovely message that even the most significant life problems will have simple solutions.

Minus Points:

The makers could have kept the runtime in check as the film feels a bit lengthy. At times the movie gets slowed down, and the editing team could have shortened the length of a few sequences for a much better viewing experience.

A few scenes in the second half are repetitive and predictable. Though the emotions are handled sensibly for the most part, a few scenes could have been presented even better without cliches. The movie is a light-hearted family drama that highlights a health issue, and those who expect commercial and time pass stuff may get disappointed.

Technical Aspects:

Sean Roldan’s delightful music seamlessly integrates into the plot. The cinematography by Jayanth Sethu Mathavan is too good. The production design is neat, and the makers spent what was required for the movie. The editing in the first half is alright, but it could have been still better in the second half.

Coming to the director, Vinayak Chandrasekaran, he makes a good debut with Good Night. A simple story has been told in an effective manner through a neat mixture of comedy and emotions. Vinayak Chandrasekaran also extracted solid performances from the lead cast, and he is the one to watch out for.

Verdict:

Overall, Good Night is a simple yet adorable film that deals with a common health issue. Manikandan and Meetha Raghunath deliver incredible performances, and director Vinayak Chandrasekaran makes a promising debut with this slice-of-life drama. On the flip side, the movie, at times, is slightly slow, and a few cliches could have been avoided. Nevertheless, if you love watching light-hearted dramas, Good Night will end up being a pleasant watch.
