Veteran actor Sarathkumar and young hero Ashok Selvan-starrer Por Thozhil has made its OTT debut recently. Check out our review to know how the film is.

Story:

Prakash (Ashok Selvan) is appointed as a trainee DSP under the mentorship of SP Lokanathan (Sarath Kumar) in Chennai. Along with the technical assistant Veena (Nikhila Vimal), they head to Trichy to unravel the mystery behind a series of brutal murders of girls in the city. Did they solve the mystery? Who is the accused? What’s the motive? The movie answers all these questions.

Plus Points:

Director Vignesh Raja crafts Por Thozhil into an intriguing crime investigation thriller, infusing decent thrills and suspense into the story.

Sarathkumar’s performance is commendable. He maintains the required seriousness throughout the film. His performance is well complemented by Ashok Selvan. The director skillfully contrasts their roles, which significantly benefits the film.

Despite his limited screen time, the late Sarath Babu delivers a subtle yet impactful performance in the second half, adding more suspense to the film.

The background score and low-light visuals, crucial for creating an edge-of-the-seat experience, enhance the viewing pleasure, thanks to the talented team.

Minus Points:

While the director weaves a good story with engaging scenes, more focus on the screenplay could have made the film more riveting. A more intense screenplay might have heightened the thrill factor.

Nikhila Vimal’s portrayal of Veena is adequate and essential to the movie. However, adding more depth to her character could have generated more curiosity.

Casting a more recognisable figure as the villain might have transformed the audience’s viewing experience, potentially leading to a shocking twist.

Technical Aspects:

In his feature debut, Vignesh Raja delivers a well-narrated edge-of-the-seat thriller. He succeeds in creating an engaging experience. A tighter screenplay could have drawn more attention.

Jakes Bejoy’s terrific score enhances many scenes. Sreejith Sarang’s editing is impressive, although a crisper edit could have improved the film further. Kalaiselvan Sivaji’s cinematography is excellent, and the dubbing adds a local flavour. The absence of songs is a positive aspect of the film.

Verdict:

On the whole, Por Thozhil is an engaging crime investigation thriller that captivates from beginning to end. The performances of Sarathkumar and Ashok Selvan are commendable, and the background score played a pivotal role in making the film interesting. Despite a few slow moments and pacing issues, the film is a good choice for a weekend watch.
