Review : Prathinidhi 2 – Mediocre political drama

After a long break, actor Nara Rohit has returned with the film Prathinidhi 2. The movie marks the directorial debut of famous journalist Murthy Devagupthapu. Let’s see how the movie is.

Story:

A famous journalist (Udaya Bhanu) establishes a news channel named NNC to tell nothing but the truth to the public. She is very socially responsible and not money-minded. She appoints an honest journalist, Chetan (Nara Rohit), as the company’s CEO, and he starts exposing corrupt political leaders. This is when CM Prajapathi (Sachin Khedekar) gets assassinated. Who is behind this assassination? What is the assassin’s motive? Did Chetan find out the people behind the assassination? This is what Prathindhi 2 is about.

Plus Points:

The first half has a familiar plot where the hero exposes corrupt leaders. Despite the predictable nature, some portions are handled well. The protagonist questions corrupt politicians on a live show and exposes their real nature. Also, the hero tries to educate the public about the significance of voting through a video byte. These scenes aren’t anything new, but the intentions and message the film tries to convey are good, and this makes the first half passable.

The smart dialogues and fast-paced narration make us forget the familiar terrain. The Sapthagiri comedy track, scenes before and after the by-poll, and passable interval twist engage us to an extent. After a gap, Nara Rohit is back on the big screen, and he did a pretty good job in the film. As a sincere reporter who questions any form of injustice by going to any extent, the actor did a satisfactory job. His dialogue delivery is intact. Sachin Khedekar, Dinesh Teja, Udaya Bhanu, and Sapthagiri are decent in their roles.

Minus Points:

The second half is entirely disappointing, to say the least. While the whole first half is about bringing to light political corruption, the second half focuses on the CBI investigation of CM’s assassination. But the way the investigation process is showcased looks outright silly. The caricaturish presentation of high-profile leaders and officers brings down the good intentions.

The director completely ignores the logical aspects to give the film a commercial touch. Multiple scenes in the movie throw logic out the window and go overboard. There is no seriousness or proper flow in the proceedings. Had the team taken a realistic approach without including superficial elements, the movie would have served its purpose.

The romantic song could have been avoided, and the childhood portions of the protagonist needed more depth. A cliffhanger at the end gives a lead to the third part, but it hardly invokes any interest.

Technical Aspects:

Mahati Swara Sagar’s music isn’t great, and Nani Chamidisetty’s cinematography is just about okay. The editing is good, and the film maintains a fast pace for the most part. The VFX work is poor. Ajay’s climax scene in an airport and scenes that have huge crowds look odd on the big screen.

Murthy Devagupthapu’s direction is below par. The first half has some engaging moments, but the director couldn’t continue the same momentum for the final hour. The attempt is honest, but the movie misses the mark due to shallow writing and the addition of commercial elements.

Verdict:

On the whole, Prathinidhi 2 has a decent premise, but the superficial writing restricts the film from conveying its intended message. Nara Rohit shines as a sincere journalist, and the first half is passable, with some engaging moments. But the second half falls like a pack of cards with poorly written scenes. Despite showing signs of becoming an honest political drama, the film ultimately falls short.
