Raju Weds Rambai is the maiden production of director Venu Udugula. Debut director Saailu Kompati’s bold speech at the pre-release event, the viral melody track, and the affordable ticket prices helped the film draw attention. It hit theaters today, and here is our take on it.

Story:

Set in 2010 in a remote village on the Khammam–Warangal border, the film opens with Raju (Akhil Uddemari), a marriage band owner, and Rambai (Tejaswi Rao) falling in love within a grounded rural setup. Their harmony breaks when her father Venkanna (Chaitanya Jonnalagadda), an arrogant PHC employee, opposes their relationship. The couple moves forward anyway until a shocking incident turns their lives upside down. What happens, why Venkanna objects, and how it all concludes forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

The lead pair, Akhil and Tejaswi, deliver natural performances that suit the film’s rustic setting. Their combination scenes during the relationship are handled well and youth will connect with them easily. The village backdrop is also presented neatly.

Chaitanya Jonnalagadda stands out more than the leads. His character arc, although somewhat reminiscent of a role from a recent hit, is convincing and his preparation shows. This performance will help him land more projects very soon.

The melody track Rambai Neemeeda Naku generated strong buzz and is well picturised on screen. The song is also used effectively as background music throughout the film, adding to the emotion. The climax delivers a shocking twist and the real-incident inspiration gives it additional weight.

Minus Points:

The storyline is straightforward and occasionally feels stretched, causing the narrative to lose momentum. The first half runs slow and the second half continues with the same pace without a sense of urgency.

Several scenes feel underdeveloped. The emotional beats, especially the death of Shivaji Raja and the immediate aftermath, do not land as intended. The moment had the potential to stand alongside the climax but ends up mild.

The lead pair performs well but needed more depth in key emotional scenes. A few of their interactions come across as amateurish. The love portions, although based on a real incident, could have been shaped with more intensity to give the narrative a smoother flow.

Technical Aspects:

Saailu Kompati’s effort to present a raw and real story with a strong twist is commendable, but tighter writing and sharper scene construction would have improved the flow. With stronger emotional cues, the build-up to the climax could have carried more weight.

Suresh Bobbili’s music adds solid impact to many scenes. Wajid Baig’s cinematography is adequate and captures the rural environment well. Naresh Adupa’s editing leaves scope for improvement. Production values are decent for the scale.

Verdict:

On the whole, Raju Weds Rambai is a decent love story that rises through its shocking climax and strong musical support. Chaitanya Jonnalagadda delivers an impressive performance, and the leads hold the film together despite a few flat emotional beats and stretched portions. The film is a good one-time watch, especially for youth, who will connect with its setting and romance. For others, the impactful climax adds value.
