Made on a modest budget of around Rs. 2 crore, Hindi film Hanuman Ansh created an unprecedented box office storm, crossing over Rs. 430 crore worldwide. Now, the film’s Telugu version has arrived in theatres. Here is our review.

Story:

Set in the pre-Independence era, Dr. Ram Nandan Bhosale (Chandan Anand) is a man of science with zero faith in God. However, a life-altering incident shakes his skepticism, leading him to cross paths with Lakshminarayan Sharma, who later becomes known as Neem Karoli Baba (Shobhinaw Satyaa). Bhosale gradually recounts who this mystic is, his transformation into Neem Karoli Baba, and the lives he touched along the way. This spiritual journey forms the crux of the narrative.

Plus Points:

For any devotional or biographical drama to work, it needs a genuine emotional core, and Hanuman Ansh delivers precisely that. While the first half lays the foundation, the second half steadily builds the emotional intensity, allowing viewers to look past cinematic liberties and simply invest in Baba’s journey.

Commendably, the makers steer clear of political agendas or propaganda. The narrative remains solely focused on Baba’s life and the quiet compassion that drew countless followers toward him during that period.

In the titular role, Shobhinaw Satyaa delivers a grounded, dignified performance without ever leaning into melodrama. The supporting cast complements him well with similarly restrained acting.

What elevates these emotional beats is the soulful soundtrack and background score, which stand out as the film’s greatest strength. Key sequences, such as the confrontation on the train with an arrogant British officer, the humble meal at Parvathi’s house, and the striking Shiva-inspired imagery in the underground tunnel leading into the interval, leave a lasting impression.

Minus Points:

Viewers stepping into theatres expecting dramatic twists, high-octane conflicts, or flashy cinematic miracles will be disappointed. The narrative is meditative and straightforward, designed more as a reflective life lesson than a conventional commercial movie.

The sluggish pacing is a noticeable drawback. The story flows like a quiet stream, which makes it challenging to stay consistently gripped throughout the runtime.

While the spiritual themes carry broad appeal, the overall impact is undeniably stronger for those who already know Neem Karoli Baba’s life history. Audiences entering without prior context may find the narrative somewhat distant and occasionally repetitive.

Technical Aspects:

The music department deserves the lion’s share of praise, as both the background score and the songs carry the weight of the storytelling. Vishal Chaturvedi handles the direction and dialogues with a sincere, grounded touch. The cinematography captures the period backdrop decently.

On the downside, the editing could have been considerably tighter, since several scenes linger far longer than necessary. Production values are fair for the scale, and the Telugu dubbing has been executed with care, making it feel like a native release rather than an afterthought.

Verdict:

On the whole, Hanuman Ansh is a sincere devotional drama with several moments that strike the right emotional chord, particularly in the second half. Anchored by restrained performances and an outstanding musical score, it succeeds as a heartfelt spiritual reflection. While the deliberate pacing and lack of dramatic highs test one’s patience at times, devotees of Neem Karoli Baba will connect deeply with it, while general moviegoers will find it a decent, passable watch.
