418 is the latest horror film that gained good buzz with its promotional content. The movie backed by Prashanth Neel and Mythri Movie Makers is now out in theatres. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

An abandoned building that was previously a mental asylum is later converted into a college boys’ hostel. However, everyone there believes that there is some supernatural presence in Room No. 418. Vivek Shankar (Surya Raj), who is allotted Room No. 417, experiences a bizarre incident, but his friend Rohith (Charan Lakkaraju) doesn’t believe him. Determined to find the truth, Vivek pursues the matter, leading to a series of revelations.

Plus Points:

The movie relies more on atmospheric horror than traditional jump scares. The unsettling and spooky atmosphere is created effectively through its setting, lighting, sound design, visuals, and background score. The horror mood is maintained throughout.

As the makers promised, this is an organic attempt at delivering a true-blue horror film. At no point does the film deviate from its core concept. The emotional backstory lends good support to the film. All the main characters are well integrated into the central plot.

Chaithra J Achar’s performance stands out. She nails her part, and some of her expressions are genuinely scary. Charan Lakkaraju, Preethi Pagadala, Surya Raj, and Ramesh Indira perform well in their respective roles. The twists are neat.

Minus Points:

Though the makers didn’t promote the film much, a talk started growing on social media that it was the scariest film ever and had even sent chills down the spines of the censor board members. This publicity, whether intentional or unintentional, acts as the key drawback.

Hence, those expecting the usual jump scares might be disappointed, as the film prioritizes atmospheric horror over sudden scares. Conventional horror tropes aren’t used much. If watched without high expectations, the film can work for you.

The song depicting the bond between the lead characters isn’t effective. The climax could have been more impactful with better closure. At times, the narrative slows down.

Technical Aspects:

Anupam’s sound design and Venky GG’s background score are solid and elevate the impact of some key moments. The sound of anklets echoing through the auditorium is particularly effective. The editing is decent, while Dinesh Divakaran’s cinematography helps create a haunting atmosphere.

The makers have spent what was required for the film. First-time director Kirtan Nadugouda does a decent job. The way he has penned the backstory with an emotional touch is impressive. There are moments that showcase his calibre, though there is still room for improvement.

Verdict:

On the whole, 418 is a sincere attempt at horror that builds and maintains a spooky atmosphere through its setting and strong technical aspects. Chaithra J Achar does a commendable job and carries the movie on her shoulders. However, the social media hype around the film being extremely scary might leave those expecting conventional jump scares disappointed, and the climax could have been handled more effectively. If watched with the right expectations, the film might work for you.

Haiku is a Tamil romantic drama that marks the Kollywood debut of Court fame Sridevi Apalla. Aegan makes his solo hero debut with this movie, which is now in cinemas in Tamil and Telugu. Here’s the review to know how it fares.

Story:

Manohar (Aegan) gets into trouble with his college friends, leading to his rustication. He later joins a women’s college, where he is the only male student, and falls in love with Pavazhakodi (Sridevi Apalla). Complications lead to their separation, and years later, his colleague Nivedha (Femina George) falls for him. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

Plus Points:

Aegan delivers a decent performance and does a fair job in his debut as a lead actor. Sridevi Apalla gives a mature performance and handles a few scenes well, leaving a decent impact. Femina George brings a girl-next-door feel to her character, and her bubbly act adds some fun to the story here and there.

The college episode, where Manohar struggles to adjust to being the only male student in a college with 2,000 female students, comes out well. The comedy in these portions offers some relief.

Minus Points:

It’s a very routine story that audiences have seen for years. There is no novelty, and the director fails to convey the point he intends to make with enough clarity. In trying to convey his point, the director loses his way, and several scenes become boring instead of delivering the intended feel-good vibe.

The first half feels like a complete movie in itself, but the real decline begins in the second half. Scenes come and go without much clarity, testing the audience’s patience. The repetitive use of “Kanna” and “Kodi” as nicknames feels artificial and even cringeworthy.

At places, Femina’s character feels out of place, not because of her acting, but because of the way her character develops. Many scenes also feel repetitive, making the movie unnecessarily long and boring.

Adirchi Arun, Subramanian Sethu, Adhiyaman, Mime Gopi, Indhumathi Manigandan and others are also part of the cast, but their presence does not add much to the film.

Technical Aspects:

Director Yuvraj Chinnasamy fails to translate his ideas from paper to screen effectively. The screenplay loses its flow, and the scenes become unclear in the second half, which affects the overall film. Priyesh Gurusamy’s cinematography is adequate, as is the music by Siddhu Kumar. Sakthi Pranesh P’s editing could have been sharper, especially in the second half. The production values are ordinary. Telugu dubbing is okay.

Verdict:

On the whole, Haiku is a disappointing romantic drama, despite okay performances from the lead pair, Aegan and Sridevi Apalla. The weak screenplay, writing issues, underdeveloped character arcs and repetitive scenes, particularly in the second half, make it a boring watch. It is better to look for other options.

Movie Name : Jana Nayakudu

Release Date : July 23, 2026
123telugu.com Rating : 2.5/5
Starring : Thalapathy Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev and Others
Director : H Vinoth
Producer : Venkat K Narayana
Music Director : Anirudh Ravichander
Cinematographer : Sathyan Sooryan
Editor : Pradeep E. Ragav

Jana Nayagan was all set to release during the Sankranthi 2026 season as Thalapathy Vijay’s farewell film before he dedicated himself to politics. But things took a different turn. Delayed once, twice, thrice… and then again, the film kept getting pushed further. By the time it was finally ready, actor Vijay had become Chief Minister Vijay. Then came another shock – the entire film was leaked online in high quality. After overcoming countless hurdles, most notably its prolonged CBFC certification issues, Jana Nayagan has finally hit screens across the globe today, with the buzz at an all-time high. Let’s find out if this ‘one last time’ movie lived up to the expectations it raised.

Story:

Thalapathy Vetri Kondan (TVK) walks out of jail after serving his sentence and promises Jailer Srikanth (Gautham Vasudev Menon) that he will turn Vijji (Mamitha Baiju) into an Army officer. As he tries to transform the reluctant youngster, India comes under threat from Amrish Poojari, alias John Himler (Bobby Deol), who is plotting a deadly mission called Project MM against the nation. Whether Vijji fulfills TVK’s dream and whether John Himler succeeds in his mission form the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

The biggest attraction of Jana Nayakudu is that it marks Thalapathy Vijay’s final film. The makers use this factor effectively by packing the film with several crowd-pleasing episodes that celebrate the star’s larger-than-life image.

The jail introduction, the interval sequence, and the emotionally charged Madurai episode, followed by a powerful action stretch, are among the film’s major highlights. These sequences generate good theatrical moments and are sure to delight hardcore Vijay’s fans.

The emotional thread works in parts, particularly during the opening portions of the second half. The scene in which Vijay speaks about women’s safety is presented with sincerity and is likely to resonate with a section of the audience.

Vijay is completely at ease in a role tailor-made for him. His screen presence, signature mannerisms, and effortless style keep the film watchable even when the screenplay loses momentum. Thalapathy Kacheri once again showcases his dancing ability.

Mamitha Baiju delivers a neat performance and shares a comfortable on-screen equation with Vijay. Prakash Raj leaves a mark despite limited screen time. Bobby Deol does a decent job as the antagonist, even though the writing of his character is familiar. The supporting cast performs its part satisfactorily.

Minus Points:

The film’s biggest drawback is its striking resemblance to Bhagavanth Kesari. Director H. Vinoth has made only a few noticeable changes, mainly to the antagonist’s track, portions of the backstory, and the climax involving advanced technology. Apart from these additions, the screenplay largely follows a familiar path, with several moments rewritten to suit Vijay’s image. However, these changes fail to make the film feel fresh.

Although the second half begins on a promising note, it gradually loses momentum and turns into a dull affair. The emotional portions hold the narrative together only for a while before the screenplay becomes repetitive and uninspiring. The climax, in particular, suffers from poor execution, predictable twists, and disappointing visual effects, preventing the film from ending on a satisfying note.

The writing also demands that the audience overlook several logical inconsistencies. These moments may not even work for hardcore Vijay fans.

Pooja Hegde, Priyamani, Revathi, Sunil, Nassar, and several other notable actors receive limited scope and are left without meaningful character arcs. The lengthy runtime further affects the film. Bobby Deol’s mission itself feels outdated, and certain narrative choices, such as the ease with which confidential Army information becomes accessible, further weaken the overall impact.

Technical Aspects:

H. Vinoth fails to give Vijay a memorable farewell. His heavy reliance on the Bhagavanth Kesari template limits the film’s originality. A fresher narrative approach and a stronger climax could have made a significant difference.

Anirudh Ravichander delivers a satisfactory background score that elevates several commercial episodes, although the soundtrack as a whole is not among his finest works. Sathyan Sooryan’s cinematography complements the film’s tone nicely.

Pradeep E. Raghav’s editing is adequate, and trimming some repetitive stretches in the latter half would have resulted in a tighter narrative. The production values remain decent, but the visual effects, especially in the climax, are disappointing.

Verdict:

On the whole, Jana Nayakudu (Jana Nayagan) turns out to be a routine commercial entertainer that fails to leave a lasting impact. While Thalapathy Vijay’s screen presence and a few action episodes work in the film’s favour, they are overshadowed by the familiar storyline, repetitive second half, weak writing, and underwhelming climax. Vijay’s fans may still find a few moments to enjoy, but for others, this ends up as a below-par farewell outing that could have been much better.
