At the age of 94, legendary filmmaker Singeetam Srinivasa Rao returns with Sing-Geetham, a genre-defying musical fantasy whose title closely echoes his own surname. Produced by Nag Ashwin of Kalki 2898 AD fame and presented by veteran producer C. Ashwini Dutt, the film has hit screens worldwide today. Here’s our review to find out how it fares.
Story:
Set in the fictional village of Kuberapuram in Andhra Pradesh, the story revolves around a gold mining company owned by Brahmayya (Banerjee) and managed by his daughter Renu (Shalini Kondepudi). Pratap (Ayaan) arrives in the village as a business partner and crosses paths with Gowri (Ahilya Bamroo), a young woman who opposes the mining activities and fiercely protects the village’s last remaining tree. When the tree is cut down, a devastated Gowri turns to Kubera, the village deity, and a mysterious incident sets off a series of strange events across the village. As fear grips the villagers and they begin to believe they have been cursed. What exactly happens to the villagers and how they deal with the unexpected situation forms the rest of the story.
Plus Points:
First and foremost, hats off to the legendary Singeetam Srinivasa Rao garu for coming up with and executing such an out-of-the-box concept. At a time when audiences are increasingly drawn toward action-packed and gore-driven content, he delivers a refreshing fantasy that feels both unique and relevant. Although the core idea dates back decades, it still feels remarkably fresh today, once again proving why he remains one of Indian cinema’s finest storytellers. The film unfolds like a modern-day fable set in an imaginative world.
The biggest highlight of Sing-Geetham is its storytelling format. Dialogues are a staple of every film, but here they seamlessly transform into songs. This is a concept that feels fresh not just for Telugu cinema but for Indian cinema as a whole. Almost every conversation carries a musical rhythm, making the experience stand apart. While some sequences hit the right notes, a few do not land with the same impact.
The second half is where the film truly comes into its own. Packed with stronger emotions and better narrative momentum, it draws the audience deeper into the story. The emotional backstory of the village is handled effectively, while the pre-climax sequence, where the villagers set aside their greed and come together to save two lives, stands out as one of the film’s most moving moments. It is easily among the biggest highlights of the movie.
Coming to the performances, Ahilya Bamroo is a delight to watch as Gowri. She looks charming on screen, brings plenty of expressiveness to the role, and proves to be a perfect fit for the character. Ayaan does a commendable job as Pratap and leaves a neat impression. Shalini Kondepudi shines in a grey-shaded role and delivers a convincing performance. Nivetha Pethuraj appears after a long gap, and despite limited screen time, she leaves a notable impact. The supporting cast does its job well.
Another major strength of the film is Devi Sri Prasad’s music. Composing for a film where conversations themselves are sung is no easy feat, but DSP pulls it off with remarkable ease. His work elevates the narrative at every step, and the songs blend naturally into the storytelling. Both the soundtrack and background score play a crucial role in enhancing the overall experience.
Minus Points:
This style of storytelling may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Watching characters communicate largely through singing takes some getting used to, and a section of the audience may find it difficult to connect with the format initially. While the story itself is fairly simple, it is the unconventional narration that sets it apart.
The first half feels somewhat stretched due to a few repetitive portions that slow down the proceedings. At times, the narrative appears to go around in circles before eventually finding its footing.
Another drawback is that the singing dialogue format occasionally undercuts the emotional weight of certain scenes. A few moments that are meant to be moving end up coming across as unintentionally funny. While the experiment deserves appreciation, the execution could have been more effective in a handful of emotional sequences.
Technical Aspects:
Singeetam Srinivasa Rao and his team deserve immense appreciation for attempting such an ambitious musical fantasy in Telugu cinema. His writing and direction once again demonstrate that he is a filmmaker far ahead of his time.
Devi Sri Prasad rises to the challenge with an outstanding musical score. Matching melodies to dialogue-driven scenes while maintaining emotional consistency is a tough task, and he handles it brilliantly. The songs are situational, well-composed, and distinct in their presentation.
Ankur Sanjeevi’s cinematography lends the film a bright and visually pleasing look. Arvind Mule’s production design complements the fantasy setting nicely. The editing is decent overall, though the first half could have benefited from tighter trimming. The visual effects are serviceable, but a little more polish would have further elevated the film.
Verdict:
On the whole, Sing-Geetham is a refreshing and emotionally engaging film that stands out for its unique storytelling style, where dialogues seamlessly turn into songs. Singeetam Srinivasa Rao garu once again showcases his brilliance through his writing, screenplay, and meaningful message. Ahilya Bamroo shines in the lead role, while Ayaan and Shalini Kondepudi perform well. Devi Sri Prasad’s music is the film’s biggest strength and elevates the experience throughout. Though the first half feels slightly stretched and a few characters could have been developed better, the film more than makes up for it with a moving second half, strong emotions, and memorable music. Family audiences can watch it without hesitation, making Sing-Geetham a wholesome and distinctive big-screen experience.
