I, Nobody is the latest Malayalam film starring Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead role. Directed by Nisam Basheer, the movie also features Parvathy Thiruvothu in another key role. The film releases in Telugu today. Here’s our review to find out how it fares.
Story:
Rajeev (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a government employee, lives with his wife Meera (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and their two daughters. One day, he is taken hostage by three robbers who flee with Rs. 17 crore from a bank but die during their getaway. Soon, the police, his neighbours, colleagues, and everyone aware of the incident become convinced that Rajeev is linked to the heist and knows where the missing money is. Is he really involved in the crime, or is he being framed? What is the truth behind the missing money? The answers unfold in the rest of the film.
Plus Points:
The film conveys a simple yet meaningful message that no amount of money can replace peace of mind and a happy life. While the core idea is not new, the way it is woven into multiple subplots gives I, Nobody a refreshing touch. It also shows how social media shapes public perception and influences people’s behaviour in real life.
Prithviraj Sukumaran once again reminds everyone why he is regarded as one of the finest performers. His restrained performance and subtle expressions, especially during the emotionally intense scenes involving his family, leave a strong impact.
Parvathy Thiruvothu delivers a composed and effective performance, and her scenes with Prithviraj are well executed. Hakkim Shah is decent in his role, while Ashokan walks away with some of the film’s best moments. Aira, as the younger daughter, adds a few light-hearted moments whenever she appears.
Although the first half has its share of decent scenes, the opening portions of the second half are much tighter and keep the narrative moving at a better pace.
Minus Points:
The central premise may not be new, but the multiple subplots help the film stand apart to an extent. However, a thriller like this demands consistently engaging narration, and that is where it falls short despite the strong performances.
The first half progresses at a sluggish pace with several dragged-out scenes. Although the second half starts on a promising note, it gradually loses its grip. The pre-climax, where the Chief Minister enters the picture, feels forced and disconnected from the core narrative. It also raises the question of whether it is really that easy for the Chief Minister to get involved in such an issue, especially when it is not directly related to the bank heist.
The climax leaves the audience more confused than satisfied. Instead of delivering a memorable payoff, the open-ended climax only leaves viewers wondering, “What’s next after all this?”
A tighter screenplay and a shorter runtime would have made the film far more engaging. Several supporting characters also deserved better utilisation. In addition, a few scenes in the first half feel repetitive and could have been trimmed.
Technical Aspects:
Nisam Basheer comes up with an interesting premise and tries to keep the narrative engaging. However, sharper pacing and a more focused screenplay, particularly in the latter half, would have made a noticeable difference.
Dinesh Purushothaman’s cinematography is neat and complements the film’s mood well. Editor Ramees MB could have trimmed the repetitive portions to make the narrative crisper. Jakes Bejoy emerges as one of the film’s biggest strengths with an outstanding background score. His music consistently elevates several crucial scenes. The production values are good, and the action choreography by Nick Ben, Kalai Kingson, and Amith Jolly Bastin deserves appreciation.
The Telugu dubbing is decent. However, the opening and end credits reflect a lack of attention to detail and give the impression that the makers took the audience for granted. Even the signboards could have been translated into Telugu. A little more effort would have made a noticeable difference.
Verdict:
On the whole, I, Nobody is just an okay crime thriller that benefits immensely from Prithviraj Sukumaran’s compelling performance and Jakes Bejoy’s exceptional background score. However, the sluggish and repetitive first half, coupled with an underwhelming pre-climax and a confusing open-ended climax, prevent it from becoming a thoroughly satisfying watch. If you enjoy slow-burn thrillers, this film may appeal to you. However, it is best to keep your expectations in check.
