Sigma is the latest Tamil movie, marking the directorial debut of Jason Sanjay, the son of Tamil Nadu CM Vijay. Sundeep Kishan plays the lead in this heist drama, which hits theaters today. Here is our review to see whether Jason actually scores a hit or completely messes up his big debut.

Story:

Set in Vizag, Guru (Sundeep Kishan) runs a home library that was his mother’s favourite place. However, his father’s Rs. 1 crore debt haunts him, putting huge pressure on him to clear it fast. By chance, he learns about a dangerous drug called Ceaser, which is handled by Vincent. Guru blackmails him for cash because he has solid proof to shut Vincent’s business down. What he does not know is that an international smuggler, Kotlapadi Venkata Reddy (Sampath Raj), is controlling everything from above and looking for something big. Did Guru get the money or did he get crushed by the villains? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:

Sundeep Kishan completely trusts Jason Sanjay’s vision and gives what the director asks for. He puts in honest effort throughout the movie and looks okay in the action scenes.

Faria Abdullah gets very little screen time and is limited to just a few scenes, doing an okay job. Sampath Raj gets a bigger chunk of the runtime and delivers his usual solid villain performance with ease.

Minus Points:

Right from the beginning, the movie starts with an old, paper-thin story that has zero freshness. Taking a simple plot is fine, but starting a film without a proper screenplay is a huge blunder. The early scenes drag badly, and the scenes between the lead pair feel totally lifeless.

By the interval point, common sense is thrown out the window just to create a dramatic twist. Guru loses something he wanted to protect all his life, but there is no real pain or sadness shown on his face. Because the emotional scene has no real depth, the mid-point fails to hit you with any impact.

The second half tests your patience completely as the story goes in endless, boring circles. It makes no sense how the hero and his gang simply fly abroad and pull off a huge heist without facing any real trouble. Audiences are left scratching their heads, wondering why simple scenes are made so confusing and why the same moments keep repeating.

The forced comedy during serious scenes further hurts the flow and takes away whatever impact the sequences could have had.

The climax and final portions completely fall apart, with no thrill or exciting payoff. Unnecessary scenes pop up out of nowhere, dragging the runtime and making you yawn in your seat.

Technical Aspects:

Jason Sanjay takes a routine story and tries to pull it off, but his writing and direction fail miserably. The camera work is strictly average, while the editing feels very old-fashioned with annoying flickers and weird color choices. Thaman’s music is on sleep mode and does not help the scenes at all. The production values are just about okay, but the fake green screen backdrops look very cheap on screen. Telugu dubbing is average.

Verdict:

On the whole, Sigma is a below-par heist drama that fails to make much of an impact. Sundeep Kishan puts in a sincere effort, but poor writing, flawed direction, and underdeveloped characters work against the film. With little emotional depth and a stretched runtime, Sigma eventually turns into a disappointing watch.
