The Dutch reality show The Traitors makes its Telugu debut with Teja Sajja as host, bringing 20 contestants to Mysore’s grand Lalitha Mahal to compete for Rs. 1 crore. With its first three episodes streaming on Amazon Prime Video from October 15, the show builds its appeal around deception, suspicion and psychological warfare, where trust can be a liability and every interaction could expose a traitor, or seal an innocent’s fate.

A Different Kind of Reality Game

Comparisons with Bigg Boss are natural, as both shows bring contestants together in one place and put their relationships to the test. But The Traitors has a different goal. The Innocents must identify the hidden Traitors, while the Traitors secretly murder contestants at night and try to avoid suspicion.

This makes even ordinary conversations important. A friendly conversation may be genuine, or it could be a way to gain someone’s trust. Staying quiet can also make a contestant suspicious, while accusing the wrong person can cost the group an innocent player.

The Ring of Doubt is where these suspicions come together. Contestants have to explain their decisions, defend themselves and convince others that their suspicions are right. These discussions are more interesting than the missions because a single wrong decision can change the course of the game.

Chinmayi and Nikhil’s Murders Give the Traitors an Advantage

The murders of Chinmayi and Nikhil show how the Traitors can weaken the group without revealing their identities. Both are murdered at midnight, leaving the Innocents with fewer people and no clear idea of whom to blame.

The Innocents also make a costly mistake by eliminating Gaurav Sunil, who is innocent. While the Traitors successfully target two contestants, the Innocents end up sending one of their own home. This gives the Traitors an early advantage, as the Innocents are still trying to understand the behaviour of the people around them.

Gaurav’s elimination also shows how difficult it is to play as an Innocent. His limited interaction with the group makes him an easy target, even though he is not a Traitor. In this game, staying away from the action can be just as risky as attracting too much attention.

Vidyullekha’s Exit Is an Early Win for the Innocents

Teja Sajja selects Ashika Padukone, Rahat Achanta and Vidyullekha Raman as the original Traitors. As the game progresses, Vidyullekha struggles to hide her identity. Changes in her behaviour attract attention, and the suspicions against her eventually lead to her banishment.

Her exit gives the Innocents an important early win. It also shows how difficult it is to maintain a convincing cover when every conversation and reaction is being watched. Once other contestants begin noticing inconsistencies, confidence alone is not enough to escape suspicion.

Ashika, meanwhile, appears more careful with her moves. She maintains friendly interactions, gathers information and votes against Vidyullekha when suspicion builds. Turning against a fellow Traitor may seem ruthless, but it helps her protect her own position in the game. Among the surviving Traitors, Ashika makes the strongest impression in these opening episodes.

Rahat also manages to stay relatively inconspicuous. With the game still in its early stages, it is too soon to say whether either of them can maintain this advantage.

Shravya and Pragathi Show Promise

On the Innocents’ side, Shravya Varma and Pragathi Mahavadi emerge as promising players. Shravya’s role in the discussions that lead to Vidyullekha’s elimination is particularly important. Spotting suspicious behaviour is only half the job; convincing others to act on that suspicion is just as important.

Mouneesha Chowdary and Varsha D’Souza also have room to become more influential as the game progresses. Several others, including Harsha Vardhan, Shreedevi Chowdary, Vishnu Oi, Dr. Meghanath Reddy, Sweekar Agasthi, Pranav (Abhinavakavi) and JSS Vardhan, have yet to make an equally strong impression in the first three episodes. Their roles could become more interesting as the game moves forward.

The Ring of Doubt Is More Interesting Than the Missions

The missions give the contestants a common goal, but they are less engaging than the discussions and accusations. The real drama begins when people who have spent the day talking normally start questioning each other’s intentions.

That is where the format works best. Contestants have to decide whether to trust their instincts, follow the group’s opinion or question a decision that everyone else seems to support. The wrong choice can send an innocent person home, while a smart move can help a Traitor survive another round.

The main drawback is the pacing. The first three episodes run for around three and a half hours combined, making them a long watch in one sitting. More engaging missions and tighter editing could improve the pace without cutting down the conversations that make the show interesting.

Teja Sajja Sets the Tone

Teja Sajja makes a promising start as host. His one-liners add to the atmosphere, especially the line, “Everything is fair in love, war, and The Traitors.” It fits the show’s central idea, where loyalty becomes difficult to judge because deception is part of the game.

Verdict

The first three episodes make The Traitors Telugu an interesting watch, mainly because of the mind games between the contestants. Chinmayi and Nikhil’s murders give the Traitors an early advantage, while Gaurav Sunil’s elimination shows that the Innocents can make mistakes of their own. Vidyullekha’s banishment gives them a reason to be hopeful, but Ashika’s careful play suggests that the Traitors will not be easy to catch.

The missions and lengthy runtime leave room for improvement, but the discussions around the Ring of Doubt keep the game engaging. The biggest challenge for the Innocents is learning to separate genuine suspicion from guesswork.

After the first three episodes, Ashika looks like one of the players to watch. The question is whether the Innocents can read her game before she gets another chance to turn their suspicions against one of their own.
