Thella Kaagitham marks the latest outing of Court fame Harsh Roshan. The movie features debutant Nakshatra as the female lead. Let’s see how the movie is.

Story:

Thella Kaagitham revolves around the lives of two teenagers, Ramu (Harsh Roshan) and Aasha (Nakshatra), who fall for each other right from their school days. However, troubles brew when the young couple make a mistake that changes their lives forever.

Plus Points:

The first half of the film is handled decently, with some well-written comedy scenes. The fun scenes center around the innocence of the lead actors, and hence, this part generates genuine laughs.

The youthful elements do go overboard at times, but the entertainment quotient balances things out. Harsh Roshan once again picked a subject that suits him perfectly, and he did a fine job. His scenes with Deepak Mali came out well.

Nakshatra made her silver-screen debut with this film, and she looked very confident throughout, making it a promising start. The way she delivered a few expressions is impressive. Ajay is fine as the heroine’s father.

Minus Points:

Films made lately to cater to the youth have been following a familiar formula: portraying the negative aspects of youth life and how youngsters get influenced by bad friendships in an exaggerated manner, before wrapping things up with a message. Thella Kaagitham is no exception, as its screenplay follows the same formulaic template.

As a result, things start getting predictable in the second half. It’s time for filmmakers to adopt a new style of storytelling by tweaking the formula in this space to leave a stronger impact.

There is also a considerable lag in the story progression with slow pacing in the second half, and the editing team should have trimmed a few repetitive scenes to keep the runtime in check.

The important conversation between the hero’s brother and Ajay towards the end sounds sensible, but the scenes leading up to it aren’t up to the mark. Had the movie focused more on the dynamic between Harsh Roshan and Saranya Pradeep, the emotional impact could have been much better. Some scenes might not sit well with the family audience.

Technical Aspects:

Vijay Bulganin’s songs are euphonious, with almost every track working effectively. His background score is also good. KV Guhan’s cinematography is neat showing the small town setup well, while the editing is below-par.

Production values are adequate. The story, screenplay, and direction are by Nandu Savarigana, and his work works in parts. Had the climax not been the way it is in the film, it would have sent the wrong signals, as it could have encouraged youngsters to make mistakes. However, the rest of the second half doesn’t maintain the same momentum as the first half. A film like this needed a shorter runtime.

Verdict:

On the whole, Thella Kaagitham is an okayish youthful romantic drama that has a few things going for it. The first half is passable, with some good comedy scenes and music, while the lead pair does well in their respective roles. However, the second half loses steam, with the pacing slowing down and the impact taking a hit. The film ends on a decent note, but the issues in the second half prevent it from being a satisfactory watch.
