Usually, the New Year period sees a steady flow of releases ahead of the Sankranthi rush. This time, however, January begins on a dull note, with six Telugu releases arriving in theatres without any real buzz or audience anticipation. Interestingly, three of them are dubbed films.
Psych Siddhartha:
Shree Nandu attempts something different with this adult-oriented romantic dark comedy, directed by Varun Reddy. Despite being distributed by Suresh Productions, the film has failed to create even minimal pre-release traction. At this point, its box office fate depends entirely on word of mouth, which is a risky position for any release.
VanaVeera:
Starring Avinash Thiruveedhula and Simran Choudhary, this film earlier made headlines due to a title change following objections from the CBFC. Shree Nandu appears in a negative role in this mythological rural drama. However, beyond the title controversy, the film has struggled to stay in the news. The Avinash Thiruveedhula directed project has failed to generate meaningful buzz ahead of its release.
Sahakutumbaanaam:
After facing multiple postponements, this family drama is finally hitting screens on January 1. Featuring Raam Kiran and Megha Akash in the lead roles and directed by Uday Sharma, the film arrives with almost no promotional push. Despite being positioned as a family entertainer, it has not managed to create curiosity or expectations among audiences.
The remaining three releases are Ashika Ranganath’s Gatha Vaibhavam, Kichcha Sudeepa’s Mark, and Shivarajkumar’s 45. All three are dubbed films trying their luck in the Telugu market after receiving lukewarm to poor responses in their original languages.
Overall, the New Year begins on a weak note for Telugu cinema, with no strong or exciting release in sight. Trade hopes now rest entirely on the big Sankranthi releases, which are expected to revive momentum at the box office.
