13 crore first week, 15 crore lifetime: The surprising box-office tale of a horror film

Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past, the spiritual sequel to Haunted 3D, directed by Vikram Bhatt, didn’t have any pre-release expectations in trade circles. However, the film surprised trade pundits by posting very good numbers over the weekend, proving the craze for the horror genre in India.

In its first week, the film reportedly made Rs. 13 crore nett, but after that, it added only Rs. 2 crore to its collection tally, wrapping the lifetime collections at Rs. 15 crores nett. Initially, the movie thrived on the genre and the sequel advantage, but later, word of mouth came into play, leading to a sharp decline in numbers.

The even more interesting thing is that Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past’s first weekend numbers were higher than those of Main Vaapus Aaunga, which was released alongside it.

While appreciation from the public and good content helped Main Vaapus Aaunga sail past the Rs. 50 crore mark with strong long legs, the underwhelming quality of Haunted 3D: Echoes Of The Past made it bite the dust.
