The 2018 period dark folk horror thriller Tumbbad left a lasting impact on Indian cinema and gained a massive cult following its recent theatrical re-release. Originally envisioned as a trilogy, the franchise is now moving in a different direction. Sohum Shah recently announced Tumbbad 2, directed by Aadesh Prasad and scheduled for release on December 3, 2027.

The development allows original creator Rahi Anil Barve to focus on his own ambitious independent mythological trilogy, which is expected to shape the next phase of his filmmaking career. The director has several major projects lined up over the coming years, spanning mythology, fantasy, and folklore.

The first installment of the trilogy is Pahadpangira, a dark period fantasy drama exploring the themes of “Gods, Men, and the First Fearless Woman.” Set against the backdrop of the Sati practice, the film examines what Barve calls “The dawn of liberation” and “The birth of feminism.” Shraddha Kapoor is reportedly being considered for the lead role, while the project is currently targeting a 2027 release.

Barve plans to conclude the trilogy with Pakshitirtha, a mythological dark fantasy epic slated for 2030. Carrying the theme “Man, Woman, and the Last Witness of Creation,” the film will tell “The Dark Saga of the Legendary Kakabhushundi bird” and promises a deep dive into mythology and folklore.

Beyond the trilogy, Barve recently released the fantasy drama Mayasabha – The Hall of Illusion, which opened to mixed reactions. He is also working on Rakt Brāhmand: The Bloody Kingdom, a fantasy action adventure Netflix series starring Samantha and Aditya Roy Kapur. Created by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K., the series is expected to premiere in late 2026 or early 2027.
