It’s a known fact that the Multiplex Association of India in North India demands at-least 8 weeks gap between theatrical and digital release. If any south film fails to do so, the Hindi version of it will not be screened in PVR-INOX, and Cinepolis chains.
The Hindi versions of the biggest Tamil grossers like Vikram, Leo, Jailer, and The GOAT among many others were not released in national chains due to the 4-week, and this ultimately affected the total collections. According to a recent report in Pink Villa, Thug Life and Coolie teams started the discussions of opting for 8-week window.
The report mentioned, “Thug Life and Coolie are the biggest Tamil releases of 2025 and have the potential to leave a mark in the North Indian market too and hence the discussion of a 8-week theatrical window. If everything goes well, the two biggies will see a good release in the National Multiplex Chains of North India.”
The Tamil cinema has been struggling to deliver a Rs.1000-crore grosser and the main reason for it is not having a wide release in the Hindi belt. If Coolie and Thug Life teams opt for a longer OTT window it will serve as a case study for upcoming Tamil big-ticket entertainers.
