Indian cinema has lost one of its greatest filmmakers with the passing of veteran director, actor, and screenwriter Bharathiraja at the age of 84. The legendary filmmaker, fondly known as Iyakkunar Imayam, passed away at his Chennai residence following age-related health issues. His death comes a little over a year after the loss of his son, actor-director Manoj Bharathiraja, a tragedy that deeply affected him.

Bharathiraja transformed South Indian cinema with his landmark debut 16 Vayathinile in 1977. He brought rural stories and realistic characters to the big screen at a time when studio-based filmmaking dominated the industry. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he directed several acclaimed films, including Sigappu Rojakkal, Mudhal Mariyadhai, and Vedham Pudhithu, earning multiple National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards South, and the Padma Shri.

The filmmaker also made a significant contribution to Telugu cinema through films such as Kotha Jeevithalu, Seethakoka Chiluka, Aradhana, and Jamadagni. His storytelling style and focus on human emotions inspired generations of filmmakers across South India. In later years, he became a respected character actor and continued to impress audiences with memorable performances. His final directorial work was Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal, a segment from the anthology series Modern Love Chennai, while he was last seen on screen in Mohanlal’s Thudarum. The unreleased film Pulavar is expected to mark his final screen appearance.

Bharathiraja is survived by his wife Chandraleela and daughter Janani. As tributes continue to pour in from all corners of the industry, Indian cinema bids farewell to a visionary filmmaker whose legacy will live on through his timeless work and the countless talents he introduced to the screen. We at 123telugu express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and admirers during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.
