Glowing word of mouth, but underwhelming collections – Surprising tale of a new Tamil film

Vijay Sethupathi recently came up with the action comedy Baththa. Written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the movie is bankrolled by star filmmaker Atlee. The pre-release promotions were low-key, but the movie opened to super-positive word of mouth.

Whoever watched Baththa has been raving about it, but the appreciation isn’t effectively translating into box-office numbers. So far, the movie has earned Rs. 15 crores gross in Tamil Nadu, but to reach the safe zone, it needs to do much more than that. The overseas performance has also been underwhelming.

The trend is surprising, given that the movie received solid appreciation. Rajini’s Jailer 2 is arriving next week, and hence, Baththa needs to make the most of this weekend.

Lijomol Jose, Baby Sahasra, Santhy Balachandran, and Vishnu Govindan played vital roles. Baththa marks the third collaboration between Vijay Sethupathi and Balaji Tharaneetharan after Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi. Sai Abhyankkar composed the tunes.
