Legendary actor and filmmaker Kamal Haasan lambasted the centre’s move of increasing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the Entertainment sector to 28 per cent. He has urged the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to cut the GST rate to 12-15 per cent.

Addressing the national media this evening, Kamal said Demonetization was introduced to curb black money but this move (GST) will take us (film industry) two steps back. “We welcome GST and one India one tax. But this rate will ruin regional cinema,” Kamal said.

“If I can’t afford the tax I’ll have to quit. I will not work for the government. What is this? Is this the East India Company?,” Kamal fumed, also adding, regional films, Hollywood films and Hindi films could not be put on the same slab.

The GST is all set to come into effect from July 1 across the country.
