Today, May 10, 2026, marks a historic moment in Tamil Nadu politics as Thalapathy Vijay officially took oath as the Chief Minister of the state. The swearing in ceremony is being held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administering the oath of office.
Several political leaders and film personalities attended the ceremony, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, actress Trisha Krishnan, and KVN Productions owner Venkat K. Narayana. Vijay’s parents, SA Chandrasekhar and Shobha, were also present at the event.
The development comes after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, where Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats. Though short of the 118 seat majority mark, Vijay formed a coalition with Congress, VCK, Left parties, and IUML, taking the alliance strength to 120 MLAs.
Vijay’s victory is considered a major political shift, as he became the first leader in nearly six decades to break the alternating rule of the DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. Alongside Vijay, nine other TVK leaders are also being sworn in as ministers in the new cabinet.
Among the notable names in the administration are ‘Bussy’ N. Anand and Aadhav Arjuna. The new government has promised a technology driven vision for Tamil Nadu, including a dedicated Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, along with welfare schemes focused on women and youth.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has asked Vijay to prove his majority through a floor test on or before May 13, 2026.
Large crowds gathered across Chennai to witness Vijay’s transition from cinema to politics, with celebrations erupting across the city following the swearing in ceremony.
