Interesting: Mani Ratnam wanted to make Ponniyin Selvan with Kamal Haasan

Legendary director Mani Ratnam’s next big movie Ponniyin Selvan-1 is gearing up for a grand release on September 30, 2022, worldwide. Now, an interesting backstory of the film is in the news.

Back in 1989, Kamal Haasan gave an interview to Kalki weekly where he talked about his collaboration with the star director Mani Ratnam to act in Ponniyin Selvan. Actors Prabhu and Satyaraj also accepted to be a part of the film.

Kamal wanted to make the epic period drama in two parts and also decided to erect giant sets and recruit Hollywood technicians for extraordinary VFX. Kamal wanted to make the film on a whopping Rs. 2 crores budget at that time. He also decided to welcome PC Sriram and Ilaiyaraaja onboard for the project.

Though Mani Ratnam pitched the idea, it was shelved for many reasons and after 23 years, Mani Ratnam made the film with other star cast and technicians. Ponniyin Selvan-1 is confirmed to hit screens globally on September 30, 2022, in multiple languages.
