It has been a very tough time for Kollywood, with no major money spinners yet in 2026. The Pongal season didn’t see cash registers ringing due to the unexpected postponement of Thalapathy Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi ended up flopping.
Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil and With Love are the only decent hits for Tamil cinema this year so far. With uncertainty surrounding Jana Nayagan’s release, many filmmakers have held back from announcing their dates. Kollywood is now aiming to bounce back strongly with two biggies, Karuppu and Kara, this Summer.
As per the latest buzz, Suriya’s Karuppu is targeting an April 9 release ahead of Tamil New Year, while Dhanush’s Kara is slated to hit the big screens on April 30. For the Tamil market to revive, it is crucial that these films deliver. However, with state elections scheduled around the same time, it remains to be seen how they perform.
