Lata Mangeshkar: A look back into the life of the late legendary singer

Lata Mangeshkar, the Nightingale of India and the Queen of Melody breathed her last this morning at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. The 92-year-old veteran singer, who recovered from Covid recently, passed away due to multi-organ failure on Sunday.

Born to Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and Shevanti on September 28, 1929, in Indore, the popular singer has Meena, Asha Bhosle, Usha Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar as siblings, who are also famous singers. She had started her singing career at the age of five and learnt music from her father.

Her first song, which was crooned for a Marathi movie, hadn’t been released and the same happened to her with another movie, Kiti Hasal (1942). Lata turned an artist with Pahili Mangalagaur (1942) and also sang in the film. She later moved to Mumbai in 1945 and learnt Hindustani music. Since then, she never looked back and sang more than 5000 songs in 36 Indian languages, mainly in Hindi and Marathi, and foreign languages. Nidurapora Thammuda from Santanam is one of her best songs in Telugu.

Besides singing and acting, she made her debut as a music director with a Marathi movie titled, Ram Ram Pavhana (1960). She later composed music for another four movies. She also produced movies like Vaadal (Marathi) and Lekin (Hindi).

She also got various awards for her wonderful contribution in the field of music as a playback singer. Lata won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 . She was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1969 followed by Padma Vibhushan in 1999. In 2001, the government conferred on her the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, acknowledging her contribution to music. Besides these, she was also awarded the Officer of the Legion of Honour from the France government in 2007.

Her sudden demise left a void in the world of Indian music. Her ardent fans including celebrities mourned her death and paid their tributes to the legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar. We at 123Telugu wishes her soul may rest in peace.
