Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Vishwaroopam has run into a fresh roadblock. The film was banned by the Tamil Nadu government for the time being since several muslim groups had lodged a complaint against the film that it shows them in negative light. After the government ordered an interim ban for 15 days, Kamal Haasan was quite shocked with the decision and he approached the Madras High Court to appeal against the government’s decision.
Sources say that the judge had asked the lawyer defending on behalf of the muslim groups to wait till the film’s release and approach the court if there are any objectionable scenes, but they didn’t relent. On the other hand, the lawyer representing Kamal Haasan and his film argued that Kamal Haasan has the right to expression and that the film has already been cleared by three censor boards across the country. After listening to the arguments on both sides, the court couldn’t come to a conclusion and decided to postpone its verdict to January 28. Apparently, the judge wanted to watch the film before arriving at a conclusion.
Vishwaroopam was all set to take a bumper opening in Tamil Nadu because of the long holiday weekend but with the latest turn of events, it’s certain that the film will lose a lot of revenue. It still remains to be seen what the Madras High Court decides on January 28. But one thing is certain – neither Kamal Haasan nor millions of his supporters who are waiting for the film with bated breath will be happy with what has happened today.
There’s a rumour doing rounds that the film’s Telugu version will release as per schedule in Andhra Pradesh. An official announcement is expected to be made soon. Kamal Haasan had written, produced and directed the film, apart from playing the lead role. The film also stars Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah and Rahul Bose in lead roles. Vishwaroopam is based on the theme of global terrorism.
