The first female superhero film from the Prashanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU), Mahakali, has unveiled its first glimpse, and it looks every bit as ambitious as expected. Marking the directorial debut of Puja Aparna Kolluri and Bhoomi Shetty’s debut as a lead, the film introduces a larger-than-life world rooted in Indian mythology.
The glimpse introduces Akshaye Khanna as Sukracharya, who seeks justice for the Asuras and aims to raise them against the gods and humans. Standing against this force is Mahakaali, who takes on evil to restore balance and peace to the universe. The final shot, featuring a fierce Mahakaali with multiple arms feeding a baby, is particularly striking and leaves a lasting impression.
The visual effects and scale are among the biggest highlights of the glimpse, while Akshaye Khanna’s intense appearance in a negative role adds further intrigue. Smaran Sai’s background score also elevates the visuals, giving the glimpse a powerful and grand feel.
Produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal under RKD Studios, Mahakali features Khushbu Sundar, Shriya Reddy, Samuthirakani, Rakesh Bedi, Rajat Kapoor, Nassar, Murali Sharma, Prudhviraj and others in key roles. Netflix has already secured the OTT rights, well ahead of the theatrical release.
Mahakali is set to arrive in cinemas on January 8, 2027, in Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam. The film will release across premium formats including IMAX 3D, Dolby Cinema, ICE, D-BOX, 4DX and ScreenX, further reflecting the scale of the project.
