Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece, The Odyssey, is turning out to be a golden goose for the makers. Just three weeks after its theatrical launch, the fantasy action drama zoomed past the $1 billion mark.
This is Nolan’s third film to achieve this milestone after The Dark Knight ($1.008B) and The Dark Knight Rises ($1.08B). Oppenheimer came pretty close to the $1 billion mark but ultimately fell short. By this weekend, The Odyssey will emerge as Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever.
The Odyssey amassed $429.65 million domestically and $578.8 million overseas for a worldwide total of $1.008 billion. IMAX contributed $257 million, and the movie will soon become the company’s highest-grossing release of all time.
The Odyssey isn’t done yet, as it is still yet to release in the world’s second-biggest market, China. A massive rollout is planned there, with the film set to open on 800 IMAX screens along with numerous standard screens across the country.
The Odyssey is now the third-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, and it won’t take much longer to claim the crown as the highest-grossing R-rated film ever by surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.33 billion).
