Freedom at Midnight arrived on OTT with its first season as a serious take on India’s Independence and Partition, adapted from Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins’ book. The response was mixed but largely respectful. The show was appreciated for its intent, performances, and scale, while the slow pace and dense narration limited its reach beyond a niche audience.

Season 2 of Freedom at Midnight is now streaming on SonyLIV and shifts the story beyond August 1947. The focus is on the aftermath of Independence, covering violence, refugee movement, and the political pressure of running a newly formed nation. The season treats freedom as a starting point rather than a conclusion and looks at the cost that followed the division of the country. Apart from Hindi, it is also available in Telugu and other languages.

The series is created and directed by Nikkhil Advani and produced by Emmay Entertainment in association with StudioNext. The ensemble cast includes Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru, Chirag Vohra as Mahatma Gandhi, and Arif Zakaria as Muhammad Ali Jinnah, along with Ira Dubey, Rajendra Chawla, KC Shankar, and Rajesh Kumar in key roles. Season 2 adopts a darker tone and tighter political focus, aiming to improve on the measured response to the first season.
