Social media has increasingly become a space where fraudsters exploit emotional appeals to solicit money. A similar incident reportedly occurred on X last night involving music director GV Prakash Kumar.
A scammer shared an old image sourced from the internet, falsely claiming it to be his deceased mother, and tagged the composer while seeking financial assistance to perform the final rites.
Moved by the appeal, GV Prakash Kumar reportedly transferred Rs. 20,000. Soon after, several users alerted him that the claim was fabricated and pointed out that the image had been taken from an unrelated source, thereby exposing the account.
The composer has not issued any public response so far. While the amount involved may be modest for him, the episode once again underscores how even well-intentioned individuals can be misled by emotionally driven online appeals.
Such incidents continue to surface on social platforms, where empathy often precedes verification, leading many users to realise the deception only after the fact.
