Telugu filmmakers’ overestimation of Avatar Fire and Ash’s potential backfires

With the postponement of Akhanda 2 from December 5 to December 12, many small films rescheduled their release dates. As a result, the Christmas 2025 season has now become overcrowded with multiple releases. This isn’t a wise decision, as films need some breathing space at the box office.

Since Avatar: Fire and Ash was slated for release on December 19, many Tollywood filmmakers assumed that the Hollywood biggie had massive hype and hence avoided clashing with James Cameron’s film.

However, much to the shock of many, Avatar: Fire and Ash opened with below-par numbers in India, collecting only around Rs. 20 crore nett, which is just half of Avatar: The Way of Water’s opening. Even the collections in the Telugu states are not up to the mark.

Tollywood filmmakers have clearly overestimated the potential of Avatar 3 and made a costly mistake by not releasing their films on December 19. Now, with the Christmas season jam-packed with releases, films may fail to realize their full potential due to excessive competition.
