This weekend, The Odyssey achieved two major milestones at the box office. It emerged as Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film ever with $1.1 billion to date, crossing The Dark Knight Rises, even before debuting in major markets like China and Japan.

Also, The Odyssey is now IMAX’s highest-grossing film of all time with $289 million, surpassing James Cameron’s epic Avatar, which made $271 million in its lifetime. The Odyssey is the first film to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras, and the hard work of Nolan eventually paid off.

In the domestic market, the IMAX version contributed $147.3 million, while the international markets amassed another $141.8 million. The Odyssey is still running to packed houses on IMAX 70mm screens, with screenings sold out till September. In China, The Odyssey is set to arrive on 800 IMAX screens this Friday.
