Marathi film Gondhal has been selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2027. More than 30 films were in contention for the selection, but the Film Federation of India jury chose Santosh Davakar’s film over the others.

Gondhal is a psychological and cultural thriller about a young bride caught in a confined life, who exploits her lover’s fascination with a sacred folk tradition, setting off a dangerous chain of manipulation, passion, and power. Films like Dhurandhar, Main Vaapas Aaunga, Peddi, Irumudi, Hanuman Ansh, and others were reportedly on the list, but Gondhal made it through.

The movie marks the directorial debut of Santosh Davakar and features Ishita Deshmukh, Yogesh Sohoni, Kishor Kadam, Suresh Vishwakarma, Nishad Bhoir, Anuj Prabhu, and others in key roles. Gondhal premiered at the International Film Festival of India in Goa and won the Silver Peacock for Special Jury Recognition.
